To Do
Mexico is an incredible city for exploring, from museums to pyramids in the jungle we really are one of the most diverse countries in the world and we are so excited you will get to see some of it.
Below are some day trips you can do in and outside Mexico City that we have done and loved, but there is so much more to explore and we would love you to share them with us later!
We recommend you plan your days and activities per zone of Mexico City so you are not caught in traffic trying to get from one side to the other as it could take you hours. For example one day for Coyoacan, one day for Polanco/Chapultepec and one day for Downtown.
In just over 1hr you could be in the breathtaking sights of the Teotihuacan pyramids, and if you are feeling adventurous we recommend doing the sunrise hot air balloon! It’s not for the faint hearted (As you can see from Reno’s face in this picture)
Pirámide del Sol, 54273 Teotihuacán de Arista, Méx., Mexico
The famous place home to the 5 de Mayo festivities and our engagement origin story.
The home of “Mole Poblano” it is a day trip away from Mexico City and a great city escape.
We recommend to take a day tour.
Take a look at Mexico’s origins and see the story of the ancient civilisations that once lived around Mexico City. One thing not to miss is the “Voladores de Papantla” who sometimes dance in the museum’s gardens.
Av. P.º de la Reforma s/n, Polanco, Bosque de Chapultepec I Secc, Miguel Hidalgo, 11560 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
A Zoo, A Castle. A park (split into two sections). Chapultepec’s park is an incredible versatile place that is home to the only castle of Mexico City. This alone could be a great full day activity where you can start by exploring the castle (and getting your steps in!), followed by a visit to the zoo and finishing it off on a nice evening walk in the park.
There are 2 sections of the park, one which is where the castle is and one where the Lago Algo is. Both are close but need a drive, we recommend you visit both!
Bosque de Chapultepec I Secc, Miguel Hidalgo, 11580 Mexico City, Mexico
It is blue, it is iconic and you for sure don’t want to miss it. The home of one of the most known female painters in the world, get a close glimpse of the workings of her mind and tragic story.
One thing to note is that if you buy tickets for Frida’s house, you can get a free ticket to the Anahuacali. Buy tickets in advance.
The museum is located in Coyoacan, we suggest to do a whole day exploring this area of the city.
Londres 247, Del Carmen, Coyoacán, 04100 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
Built for Diego Rivera, a very prominent muralist in Mexico and Frida Khalo’s husband. Built in volcanic stone in the south of the city is really worth the visit.
10 minutes by car from the Frida Kahlo Museum.
Museo 150, San Pablo Tepetlapa, Coyoacán, 04620 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
A beautiful white marble cultural centre in Mexico’s downtown. The perfect place to start exploring this area of the city.
Home to many historic murals and shows, have a look at what is going on! There might be something you don’t want to miss.
A pro-tip is to go to the Sears infront and go to their 6th floor cafe where you can have a nice drink with the palace as a backdrop.
Av. Juarez S/N, Centro Histórico de la Cdad. de México, Centro, Cuauhtémoc, 06050 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
It is a memorial arch commemorating the Mexican Revolution. It is located in the Plaza de la República.
If you go to Terraza Cha Cha Cha, you can explore the monument first.
Pl. de la República s/n, Tabacalera, Cuauhtémoc, 06030 Cuauhtémoc, CDMX, Mexico
You saw it in 007 with an epic stunt from Daniel Craig (and the best part of the movie if you ask us). You cannot miss exploring the Zocalo and the Templo Mayor ruins. You can also have a look at the Mexican Cathedral and see how much its sinking, and why not, start the year with a traditional “limpia”!
C. Versalles 94, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
On during Saturday’s so you want to make sure you plan to go then. Home of a beautiful “atresanias” market and colourful houses over cobblestones streets.
Whether you are looking for a souvenir or a different side to Mexico City, visiting this market is one of our favourite things to do when we go.
C. Dinamarca 44, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
Walk amongst the clothes stalls, see the artesanias. A two story marketplace that has everything from souvenirs to food stalls.
After your shopping you can stop and eat by the fountain of the “Coyotes”. A great plan would be to do this on the same day you do Frida Khalo’s house.
Ignacio Allende s/n, Del Carmen, Coyoacán, 04100 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
Luis Barragán House and Studio
Now… We haven’t actually managed to go there yet, but we really want to go.
Tickets are very hard to come by and they only allow visits of 6 people at the time. Every 2 weeks they release tickets, so make sure you are quick to book once it opens.
Gral. Francisco Ramírez 12, Ampliación Daniel Garza, Amp Daniel Garza, Miguel Hidalgo, 11840 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
